Hello! My name is Mrs. Nickel. I am very excited to begin this year and meet all of you and your students! This will be my 8th year with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System and I can't wait to get to know the Class of 2022! I am originally from upstate New York so naturally I am a Buffalo Bills fan. My husband and I relocated shortly after the birth of our first son and are so happy to be rid of the snow! Charlotte is a wonderful city and we love the activities and diversity it offers our family.
As a teacher I believe that a strong family/teacher/student relationship is vital to a successful year. I encourage families to contact me as often as they feel necessary and to share any and all information they can about their individual student to help me get to know them and their needs better. I do have an open door policy, however, I encourage families to try to let me know when they plan to visit in order to ensure we will be in the classroom and there will not be testing, etc. occurring during that time.
I also believe that the 5th grade year is an integral time for students to learn responsibility and the importance of applying themselves fully. The classroom is set up in order to scaffold students into taking on the responsibility of school work and expectations themselves in order to best prepare them for middle school. There are boards for missing work, absent work, attendance, etc. This will condition students to understand they must be responsible for their own learning and will allow them to be successful as they enter middle school.
If ever you have a concern please feel free to contact me. A teacher is never done learning as our world, our children, and our expectations are ever changing. I am open to making changes based on my families concerns and suggestions when it benefits my students and their ability to learn.
Here's to a GREAT year and to your students, they are our future!
